The Barclays statement export, column by column.

Four columns matter, one of them decides whether your expenses are expenses. Here is the shape of the file and the two things worth checking before you import a year of it.

The file

Date, Description, Amount, Memo.

Amount is one signed column

Money out is negative. There is no separate Paid In / Paid Out pair, so the sign is the only thing distinguishing a payment from a receipt — read it the wrong way and every expense in the year becomes income.

Memo is worth keeping

It carries the reference, which is often where the payee name or an invoice number actually sits. Descriptions on card payments are frequently less useful than the memo beside them.

Zero-amount rows are skipped

Heading and balance rows appear in some exports. Importing them as £0.00 transactions would pad a year with rows that mean nothing.

Dates read the UK way

05/01/2025 is 5 January. Worth a glance if the file has been anywhere near a US spreadsheet.

Before you import a year

Two checks, about a minute.

Find a payment you recognise

A rent payment, a supplier, anything you know went out. If its Amount is negative, the sign convention is the expected one. That single check catches the error that is otherwise invisible — books that balance perfectly while describing the opposite of what happened.

Check the first and last dates

Confirm the range is the one you asked for and that the day and month are the way round you expect. A file that starts on the 13th of a month proves the order for you; one that starts on the 5th does not.

Overlapping date ranges are safe — repeated rows are detected on import rather than doubled into the ledger.

FAQ

Barclays exports, in practice.

Which Barclays export should I take?

The CSV or Excel download from the account’s transaction list. Take the widest date range the screen will give you in one go — a year in one file is easier to check than twelve monthlies, and overlapping ranges are fine because duplicate rows are detected on import rather than doubled up.

What columns does the file have?

A Barclays export is recognised by four of them: Date, Description, Amount and Memo. Amount is a single signed column — money out is negative. Memo carries the reference, which is often where a payee name or invoice number actually lives, so it is kept rather than dropped.

Why does my file have a row with no amount?

Some exports include heading or balance rows with a blank or zero amount. Those are skipped rather than imported as £0.00 transactions, which would otherwise clutter a year with rows that mean nothing.

Can I use the Excel version instead?

Yes. .xlsx is converted on upload. Legacy .xls is refused at the form on purpose — a visible error is safer than a file that half-reads into the wrong columns.

Does the export include a running balance?

Barclays exports vary on this and the parser does not rely on one. Reconciliation is done against the closing balance you enter for the statement, so a missing balance column costs nothing.

What about Barclaycard?

A credit card export is a different shape and is read by column name rather than by a dedicated Barclays parser. It imports; treat the sign convention with the same care as any card statement, since a card account runs the opposite way to a bank account.
