Guides · Monzo

Monzo exports more context than most banks, including the currency.

Name, notes, tags, even an emoji column. The one that matters most for the accounts is Currency — because it is the field that stops a foreign transaction being read as sterling.

The file

Date, Name, Amount, Currency, Notes and #tags.

Name is the counterparty

Used as both the description and the payee, so rules match against a real merchant name rather than a processor string.

Notes and #tags is kept as the reference

Anything the client typed against a transaction survives the import — which on a personal-ish account is often the only explanation you will get.

Amount is one signed column

Money out is negative.

There is a Currency column, and it is read

Not for conversion — for detection. It is what allows a non-sterling row to be flagged rather than silently believed.

The currency column

Why this one field is worth the whole page.

Entrio reads every amount as GBP. A €40 line imported as £40 produces a journal that balances, a statement that reconciles against a total which is equally wrong, and no warning anywhere — an error of original entry the trial balance cannot see. Because Monzo names the currency on each row, files containing non-sterling transactions are detected at import and the currencies found are stated on the face of the report and in the export checks. Nothing is converted: that needs a rate for the transaction date and a decision about which rate, and guessing is worse than saying so. What you get is the knowledge that those rows need a decision.

FAQ

Monzo exports, in practice.

Why does the file have an Emoji column?

Monzo tags transactions with category emoji. It is one of the markers used to recognise the format, and it is otherwise ignored on import.

Are foreign transactions converted?

No. They are detected and named, never converted. A rate needs a date and a policy, and guessing produces figures that look right and are not.

Does Monzo Business export the same shape?

The business export uses the same column vocabulary and imports the same way.

What happens to the notes and tags?

They are kept as the transaction reference, so they are visible during review and searchable.

Is the personal account worth importing for a sole trader?

That is a judgement for the accountant, not the software. What the import gives you is every row with its counterparty name intact, and detection for anything that looks like personal spending.
